Street outreach workers collaborate with law enforcement agencies, often engaging youth in neighborhoods deemed as high risk for violent crime. Street outreach workers are often used in conjunction with problem-oriented policing strategies. By building relationships with youth in high-crime areas, they can provide the needed supports to reduce youth involvement in gun-involved crime, such as gang violence and non-fatal shootings. To be the most effective, and to reduce potential harms, this approach should be developed with and tailored to the community where it will be implemented.
