The goal of public awareness campaigns targeting gun violence is to increase communities’ knowledge about specific aspects of gun-involved injury. They target the specific needs of the community (e.g., youth violence, gang violence). They may also include broad campaigns such as safety awareness weeks, education about safe firearm storage, reminders to report lost or stolen weapons, risk factors for suicide or youth violence, and access to ghost guns. To be the most effective, and to reduce potential harms, public awareness campaigns should be developed with and tailored to the community where they will be implemented.
