Street outreach workers collaborate with law enforcement agencies, often engaging youth in neighborhoods deemed as high risk for violent crime. Street outreach workers are often used in conjunction with problem oriented policing strategies. By building relationships with youth in high-crime areas, they can provide the needed supports to reduce youth involvement in gun-involved crime, such as gang violence and non-fatal shootings. To be the most effective, and to reduce potential harms, this approach should be developed with and tailored to the community where it will be implemented.
