Mentoring approaches to reduce gun violence combine elements of group-based violence intervention (focused deterrence), hospital-based programs, and violence interrupter programs to provide voluntary intensive mentoring and wraparound community-based services to marginalized youth. Mentors are able to intervene in young people’s lives to help them engage in positive activities and avoid criminal involvement, including gang violence and non-fatal shootings. To be the most effective, and to reduce potential harms, this approach should be developed with and tailored to the community where it will be implemented.
