Hospital-policing partnerships aim to improve law enforcement’s coordination with social services and healthcare partners. Law enforcement agencies can partner with hospitals to provide case management or referrals to social services for patients who are victims or perpetrators of crime. For example, law enforcement agencies may partner with hospitals to conduct outreach to populations that might not have strong ties to law enforcement to increase information sharing about crime suspects. The approach can also involve data sharing on the characteristics of gunshot victims and locations of shooting incidents to support the development of gun violence prevention programs that reduce non-fatal shootings. To be the most effective, and to reduce potential harms, this approach should be developed with and tailored to the community where it will be implemented.
