Gun Buy-Back or Turn-In Programs

Gun buy-back programs enable law enforcement agencies to offer cash, gift certificates, or other incentives in exchange for guns. The goal of these programs is to reduce the number of guns on the street (and thus gun-related homicides and non-fatal shootings) as well as to increase community bonds and awareness and mobilize informal types of social control against gun violence. To be most effective, and to reduce potential harms, this approach should be developed and tailored to the community where it will be implemented.
