Gunshot detection technology is an acoustic surveillance system that law enforcement agencies install in high-crime areas so that it notifies police about the precise location of gunshots fired. This technology allows police to respond quickly to gun-involved incidents, including homicides and non-fatal shootings. A quick response time can facilitate the collection of evidence, including the identification of witnesses. To be the most effective, and to reduce potential harms, this approach should be developed and tailored to the community where it will be implemented. Law enforcement agencies should seek community input about where to place these devices and should notify the community when the devices are implemented.
