TTA Type:
  • TTA Type

  • Area

Domestic violence (DV), including intimate partner violence, is a significant crisis across the nation, in both rural and urban areas. An abusive intimate partner’s access to firearms can often mean the difference between life and death. Further, firearms can contribute significantly to the use of domestic violence to threaten, coerce, or control victims. This training will not only discuss best practices for trauma-informed investigations and prosecutions for DV cases but also provide information on local victim advocacy programs and how criminal justice actors can collaborate with them.

Goal and Objectives:
  • Provide an understanding of foundational trauma neurobiology, DV dynamics, and best practices for collaborating with and complementing local DV service providers.
  • Present practical skills for trauma-informed policing (including trauma-informed interviewing and investigations and victim and witness cooperation and support).
  • Provide in-depth knowledge of innovative strategies for trauma-informed prosecution of DV cases, including (1) improved prosecutorial DV investigations, (2) solutions for charging cases without relying on victims and witnesses of DV, and (3) available and relevant federal DV statutes.
